I'll tell your brother, yeah, don't need no other talkin' 'bout (meatloaf) meatloaf, meatloaf lover! Warms you from the inside, like it's made by your mother. *silence* “Are you singing?” Yes, I am. “Why?” Because we're going to talk about meatloaf y’all! This classic meatloaf recipe will surely make you sing this song and beg for more. But before the baking begins, let’s have a little research about meatloaves first. *winks*
Meatloaf is a dish of ground meat mixed with other ingredients, formed into a loaf shape, then baked. Its loaf shape is formed by cooking it in a loaf pan, or by forming it with hands on a flat baking pan. Meatloaves are made from ground beef. Lamb, pork, seafood, veal, venison, and poultry may comprise meatloaves too. Many countries have their own variation of meatloaf. In the United States, meatloaf is eaten with some kind of pasta or relish. This can be pasta or tomato sauce. They pour it on the meatloaf to form a crust during baking. Barbecue sauce and tomato ketchup may also be used.
In the United Kingdom, they have regional meatloaf dishes called Haslet, a pork meatloaf with herbs. In the Philippines, they have what they call the embutido. It consists of ground pork, minced carrots, sausages, and boiled eggs. In making this, “the meat is molded into a roll with the sausages and hard boiled eggs set in the middle.” Another variation of meatloaf is Pulpeta in Cuba. It is made of ground beef and ground ham stuffed with hard boiled eggs, and cooked on the stovetop.
In South Africa, they have the most popular meatloaf dish, bobotie. It is considered as one of South Africa’s signature dishes. According to Wikipedia, “it is a slightly sweet meatloaf flavored with curry spices, dried apricots and almonds, and is topped with whipped egg and milk topping which when baked on top of the meat filling creates an egg ‘topping’.”
