A Cleverly Designed Prefab Home That Is Saving Hundreds of Dollars

This "R.House, A Prefab Home For Rural Scotland," just goes to show that tiny house designs are popping up all over the world, even in the most unlikely of places. This tiny prefab house is located in Scotland's Isle of Skye, a popular holiday destination.

An area of Scotland known for its rugged landscape and scenic natural beauty. But like many other tourism hot spots where outsiders are snapping up properties, that popularity has resulted in a shortage of housing for locals. To address that problem, Rural Design Architects teamed up with James MacQueen Builders to produce the R.House, a line of small contemporary houses designed for the Skye and Highlands markets. At the same time, they wanted to help to stimulate the regional economy by using local workers and locally sourced building materials. The R.House has a simple gabled form and traditional exterior finishes that were inspired by local farmhouses and barns. The line up of these tiny houses now includes five base floor plans, offering from one to four bedrooms. Buyers can modify the internal layouts of these lovely tiny homes or add space with optional lean-to additions.

Tiny houses are less expensive to live in than larger ones in terms of taxes, building costs, heating, maintenance, and repair costs. In addition to being less expensive, tiny houses may also encourage a less cluttered, simpler lifestyle and reduce the ecological impacts of those who live in them. Typically the size of a tiny home rarely exceeds 500 square feet. Most tiny houses on wheels are less than 8 ft by 20 ft, with a total living space of about 120 square feet or less, this is due to ease of towing and to exempt it from the need for a building permit. Tiny houses may emphasize design over size, utilizing dual purpose features and multi-functional furniture which double as storage, and incorporate technological advances of space saving equipment and appliances. Vertical space is also used and is a common feature of small houses.
